KT, >> my guess is that the person was in some flyers

Kind of. This person had the assets evenly distributed between a Value Stock Index Fund, a International Stock Fund, and a Growth Stock fund. There was a transfer of 15% to a Small Cap Stock Index fund during the quarter and this took a similar drubbing as the rest. You are correct that the growth fund took the worst hit, but the other 3 combined took a worse hit than the growth fund.

>> The main attitude I'm seeing is that people are preserving new contributions in low risk positions

This person is not there yet.

I really feel sorry for these folks, but I guess this generation needs to learn a lesson, probably sad but true.
