Samsung develops advanced display

Samsung SDI said Thursday it has developed a large next-generation display that could eventually replace other flat-panel screens for PCs and notebooks.

Samsung SDI, the world's largest producer of cathode-ray tubes for PCs and television sets, is the first to produce a 15.1-inch model of an organic electroluminescent (OEL) display, company executives said.

The previous largest was a 13-inch screen developed by Sony earlier this year.

Samsung SDI said it expected to begin marketing smaller versions of the new-generation display from late 2003, with initial applications focused on mobile handsets and car navigation systems.

“We will be able to mass-produce larger luminescent displays for PCs and notebooks from 2005,'' said Bae Chul-han, chief technology officer for Samsung SDI.

“The market for the new screen will grow to about $4 billion in 2006 and the product will ultimately lead the market for thin displays.''

Analysts said that Samsung's OEL displays could become king of the flat-panel display market in view of low production costs and superior picture quality.

“No one will deny the new product will lead the display market in the future,'' said Daniel Kim, analyst at Merrill Lynch Korea. “But the issue is how fast developers like Samsung will commercialize it.''

Samsung SDI wants about 30 percent of the global luminescence display, Samsung officials said.

The company has spent more than $23 million (30 billion won) to develop the thin display and plans to pour in another $230 million to set up production facilities by late 2003, the executive said.

Samsung executives said the new display offered more natural colors and clearer pictures than current active-matrix displays because of its high response time.

The OEL display would emerge as a main cash cow for Samsung SDI, which controls 25 percent share of the global market for cathode-ray tubes.
