Petitions have a long and honorable tradition in our society.

The right to petition the government for a redress of grievances is one of the rights guaranteed by the First Amendment.

The Magna Charta was signed by King John at the petition of the nobles.

On July 6, 1775, the Second Continental Congress drafted the Declaration of the Causes and Necessity of Taking Up Arms after King George III turned down a petition asking him to resolve matters amicably.
