"Northwood will have double the L2 cache, which should definitely improve performance, and this was additionally backed up by Paul Otellini during the Q3 CC."

So may Tbred. Even if it doesn't, the larger L2 cache is not going make all that much of a difference, 10% maybe? And if it get's stuck on an i845 platform, it isn't going to help much.

"Although performance is a factor, and it helps to sell CPUs, it's only one factor in making the business successful"

Yep, you are correct. But it can be an important factor. It is currently AMD's hole card, and one that has been good to it. Yes, Intel has some advantages over AMD, even really strong ones. But performance is what has been giving AMD a huge boost.
