I assume, if you take losses this year that are higher than gains paid in last 3 years, and if you chose to apply carry back then remaining losses for this year can be carried forward and claim against future gains..

That's my understanding, though I leave it all in the hands of my well paid accountant. I'm planning on a BIG refund <g>.
