I would ask the proper authorities to torture the enemy to get info on where my kid was. It would be a fully reasonable action, given the circumstances, IMO. In fact, I don't know how I could ever live with myself if he turned up dead and I didn't do everything I could to get him back alive.

I admire your restraint.
I am a barbarian when it comes to my children. I would tear someone's nails off and drip acid on their eyeballs to save them.
I didn't even have to think about it.
You are right that we need to be protected from ourselves in these circumstances as I am quite sure that with no restraints I would do anything to save my child. I might wish otherwise, but I really think the veneer of civilisation would be swept away totally by the maternal force.
