I do not want to become my enemy
It simply isn't worth it to me
It may be worth it to you to "respond in kind"
It would not be worth it to me

By that logic, we should have tortured Germans captured in WWII - because the Gestapo or SS did. Likewise the Japanese.

There are reasons we didn't... it's one of the things that made us better than the Nazi's.

Meanwhile, in Vietnam the VC undeniably tortured captives, but certain US bodies also allegedly did (I'm no expert on who... CIA? some of the special forces?). This certainly weakened the reputation of the US there, and may have helped weaken their effectiveness and local support also...

If you're fighting a 'good' war, on the side of right, you have to accept that certain tactics and practices are out. End of story, they are not used or tolerated.
Of course, it doesn't hurt that it's a useful propaganda tool. But it's important to keep it completely true.
