Normally a widely followed company's earnings announcement does not touch off a big rally unless they surprise to the upside in some significant way.

The earnings upside is not there. That's given and that's a known fact. But it's the guidance that is going to matter, even a ray of hope.
That's why Chris of MSDW thought it's time to start getting a little positive in case the train leaves and with it his clients, the fund institutions. Clearly he is playing safe in case things does turn out rosy in spite of bad news after bad news which the NAS market in particular is ignoring. Calling it a two way play.
