FWIW, I use the word "niggardly" in conversation. IMO, it's useful word. I just looked it up in my OED but couldn't find an etymology. Maybe someone else will.

I've been thinking about other words that were first associated with presumably ethnicly- identified behavior:

To "welsh" on a bet
to "gyp"
a "shyster" or "shylock"
to "jew" someone down

It's interesting how all of these have negative connotations. As does the word "niggardly", come to think of it.
