I mentioned limey not pom or pommie. I've never heard a yank(is that derogatory?) call the English pommies. Don't the Aussies just call us pommies, not limeys? Limey is from when the British brought limes on the ships to prevent scurvy, but I think pom has a different origin. I believe pom actually comes from POHM, which stood for Prisoners of Her Majesty as most Brits who went to Australia in the early days were just that. I don't think there's a whole lot of vitamin C(the scurvy preventing vitamin) in apples, but I could be wrong.
