It's a pretty common medium insult, implying 'ineffectual, unattractive and unable to find a partner'... only less polite and much pithier.
Hence the modified sentence "I want everyone to know that I am a wanker" reads particularly well. And " I am a wanker. I can’t change that, and I wouldn’t want to. I like who I am, and I’m proud of who I am." is basically hilarious.

Most of us are long conditioned to think of [masturbation] as a bad, even dirty word.
Hmmm, not the word but the implications of the habit - if it's your only way of sexual release, it goes against pretty much every biological/social conditioning. It's also seen as pitiable, but not threatening.
Homosex at least has a social element to it. Because it's closer to the (biological) norm, I'd say it's therefore more threatening. Also, of course, it's rather less common than masturbation...

And again, I'm reminded of a spoof advert (from a Python book, I think) with the tagline:

Masturbation: the difficult one.
Some of us find it difficult to talk about: others find it difficult to do.

ROFL.
