Tench, I think you are right and wrong. Apps request memory from the OS. I think currently VB, Delphi and other tools have an internal max size of 2GB on strings, variants,etc. I think once the tools get modified and recompiled, all the Apps recompiled with those tools should get the benefit of larger variables etc.

Tenchusatsu,

I don't think a single x86 application is able to address more than 32 bits, even if the OS is able to address more bits. This is what I'm getting at, that applications need to be recompiled and rewritten to take advantage of x86-64.

Technically, a 64 bit OS can run multiple 32bit apps, giving each full 4 GB of memory.
