Network cards have unique identification numbers. So does each hard disk drive. Both these identification numbers are accessible from the operating system and applications. Both are used by some application developers to prevent illegal copying of software.

I would presume that Microsoft will use the DiskID number to prevent illegal copying of Windows XP.
