Constantine, Re: "IA-64 is a new microarchitecture with new instructions."

Actually, it's a new architecture. New micro-architectures are like K6, K7, P6, Netburst, which are all forms of the same x86 architecture.

Constantine, <IA-64 is a new microarchitecture with new instructions. x86-64 is almost 100% compatible with IA-32.>

IA-64 is also compatible with IA-32, if you didn't know already. There is a native mode and an IA-32 emulation mode. Of course, the performance of IA-32 emulation mode is a constant subject of ridicule, but that's largely irrelevant when it comes to the difficulties of porting software.
