There is nothing to suggest that said "architecture specific code" is a trivial thing for x86-64 compilers. If anything, this would be a perfect example of how it'll be tougher to port 32-bit code to x86-64 than people think.

Yes, porting code to IA-64 is also tough, but haven't I been saying that already?
