Of course, the overwhelming majority of the people Roosevelt was referring to, who insist on hyphenated self-reference, were born in this country. Indeed, the vast majority have never even visited the location to the left of their hyphens.

Consider: given that immigrants typically leave their home countries for a reason, why would they suddenly wish to cling to what they went to such great lengths to leave behind?
