I kinda know the industry and I would guess the largest motivation for this would be production.

Having my ear to the ground, I have heard some interesting ideas.

I believe this move would be intended to put AMAT in the forefront of the product equipment needs.

What I am trying to say, is that by being in at the beginning of a technology development, these new technologies will need product systems eventually. If we know what was being developed and prototyped then AMAT could be investing into the insight as to what technology challenges would be needed to develop product system for the volume customers.

I have heard that this would be a way to break into technology products inside as well as outside the IC / Semiconductor industry. Micro Machines and medical equipment would be examples.
