Vouchers may not be a panacea, but they do tend to create the environment around which a sense of urgency to improve the system takes root. The alternative, in far too many cases, is decay, despair and continuing to lose our children to a world of ignorance. The bureaucratically dense structural system we have today, often frustrates the best teachers, and most caring parents. We must look for innovative ways to align the system of education toward the true customers, parents and teachers, instead of the political funding sources. People do what you reward them for doing, and today the people working in the public education system are rewarded for not rocking the boat, lest they expose the flaws of the system for what they are. Each year we lose some of our best and brightest public school teachers, not because of pay, (although it plays a role), but because they are so frustrated with the system and how they must work in it. In an industry where we demand a highly educated work force, we empower teachers like an entry level Burger King employee. Actually, in many cases, an entry level Burger King employee has more ability to control the system effecting their quality of work life, then our brightest Masters educated teachers. The "monopolistic public education system" is broke. And we need to have the courage to recognize that another road may lead to a better future. The Teachers union may prevent the adoption of vouchers for another 5 or ten 10 years, by spending massively on lobbyists, and advertising campaigns designed to scare parents. But one day soon, the tide will shift, and they will be looking as foolish as the anti-change unions of the past.
