Muslims in India join protests against US strikes
This Bulletin: Sat, 27 Oct 2001 8:25 AEST
Muslims in India have joined their brethren in protesting against United States strikes on Afghanistan.

Three people died in western India when police opened fire with live ammunition to control demonstrators after Friday prayers.

Meanwhile, Muslims at the country's mosques are also taking a hardline stance on the United States strikes.

India's Muslim community is second in size only to that of Indonesia and Imam Sayed Ahmed Bukari has publicly called on India's 140 million strong Muslim minority to support Osama bin Laden and his Taliban protectors.

"I'm going out to them and telling them that America is the main terrorist, propagating terrorism throughout the world and they should protest against that country," he said.

India's Hindu nationalist government has firmly supported the attacks on Afghanistan.
