Does this mean that Walmart severely underestimated demand? Or do we have roaring windows xp sales? Is this a sleeper hit?

Not much chance of that in the consumer market. Even ignoring the lack of any consumer marketing for Linux there still seems to be a perception that Linux is impossible for anyone other than a computer expert to install and configure. See freep.com for example.
