Re: "One of the myths the teachers union likes to promote is we had at one time this seriously involved parental class which is somehow missing now. Far from it. Forty years ago, parents dropped their kids off at school and expected them to get educated. Expected them to learn how to read, write and do arithmetic. And by and large they did."

I disagree 100 percent with the above statement.

"Forty years ago, parents dropped their kids off at school and
expected them to get educated. "
My parents also came to this country with little education although it was from canada. However, I had a home and loving parents who took an interest in me. They didn't understand my books after a few grades however they did provide the environment.

I am not taking a position of teachers public etc vs vouchers . I believe the problems are much more complex. I do remember a few kids in our classes that had parents who didn't care if the kid went to school. I remember going up to one kid's house and wake him to come to school and the parents thinking it was funny. They were sick folks (alcohol) and the system (private school) didn't support the kid, I thought the teachers were dedicated to help kids like him. He ended up getting suspended going to the public schools and later in lots of trouble.
If he had been allowed to stay in our private system I believe his life would have been different.

I believe this is the reason many suburban districts are against vouchers. They do not want urban kids coming into their school system.

My note reference to the special shown on tv reminds of the kid I had in my class years ago. His parents didn't even make sure he got to school. What chance do the kids have today without two parents, one parent. etc. Our society needs to find an answer. imo
