I think that is an excellent post and I agree with all you say. Your questions are nonjudgmental and are designed to make sure that the decision has been made with full comprehension of the factors affecting it.
We all make decisions we believe and hope are based on logic and thoughtful consideration, but are influenced by so many other things. And if the first questions elicited answers that indicate some of the disconnects you mention, I would try to steer him toward talking with a counselor to resolve them. There are some things parents aren;'t qualified to handle-- but you are right to explore the possibilities.
