Since people are far more strongly motivated by their desire to avoid pain than any attraction to improving their circumstances, they will vote to maintain their current leaders if they are sufficiently comfortable. The Reform Party was attractive to Canadians who perceived that even though they were comfortable with the circumstances in Canada, they could be better -- much better. Psychology tells us that in any population, those people will always be a small minority.

So, when things get bad enough, and only then, Canadians may consider electing an alternative to the Liberals. We're not there yet, but it's the direction Canada's moving.

Stephen........" I'm afraid that Canada had it's chance to go that way. It was called the Reform Party of Canada.".....

Yes I remember that and I also remember that when Preston Manning openly said that we need to do something about our immigration policies he was labeled as a racist and good bye election. Didn't matter that the Reform Party had rep's from just about all races. What would be wrong with a 6 month background check of all new immigrants before they are permitted into the country. It would be a safety policy not a racist policy. But I think that those that have been educated to think only political correct cannot see this as anything but racist.
Do you remember about 7 years ago when the man from Jamaica who had been deported from this country on 2 occasions because he was a known criminal in his own country. It was this same man that robbed a Greek restaurant in Toronto, dragged a young women from the restaurant, stuck a gun in her face and shot her.?

If I were to say that the color of this man was anything but white I would risk being called a racist by those that wish to be politically correct.

In early days of Reform around here the defining core at meetings were just like this guy - #reply-16568137 .. except while he feels threatened by hearing spanish, they had a hate on for french ... same same though ... they screwed themselves right there, it didn't matter how many valid fiscal-conservative or law-n-order points they brought up, they were thoroughly tainted with a most ill-educated xenophobia .... narrow age range, five years each side of sixty, with british and germanic surnames predominating, and with narrow life experience histories holding their level of thought well below the great body of real canadian british and german and everybody else

Not good enough that their stated stimulus was the fascist Bill 101 in Québec - you don't fight totalitarian measures by handing them legitimacy with your own form of repressive law ... a lot of these people were members of something called APEC - 'association for the protection of english in Canada' ... translation - 'speak white or die you heathen scum, and if you can't in good conscience pray exactly as we do then you better learn quick to fake it, cuz we are utterly incapable of learning anything ourselves' ... sickening ... seriously, parts of it made me nauseous, and i have a very strong stomach .... very strong desire to find a party i can support, as well, and the disappointment i shall never forget ... Manning himself, sure, no problem .... Day, well i am far less sure ... a few acquaintances in the party here now, sure, some of them really pick up the average ... but the sort of tiny mind that is saying to me that i shouldn't be permitted to put up a sign in frigin sanskrit if i so desire, that's a good part of what keeps me from joining the thing.

'Juntos podemos' - George Walker Bush, January 2001 ... means 'together we can/are able [to accomplish whatever]' ... and he's right ... never mind the crass political motive in recognising millions of hispano voters, he's still right ... we build walls, or we build bridges, that's the choice in language suppression policy ... give me a bridge-builder every time ... cheers
