Automated services down at TD Canada Trust
Last Updated: Sat Oct 27 19:56:08 2001
TORONTO - Many people who bank with TD Canada Trust had trouble getting at their money Saturday because of a computer problem that paralysed the company's electronic system.

Customers across the country found they couldn't use their bank cards at automated tellers, and couldn't complete transactions through EasyWeb online services. TD Canada Trust debit cards also failed to work.

"It makes you feel really embarrassed," complained one main who tried to buy some electronic equipment from a store in Calgary. "The guy's looking at you like you've got no money in your account."

Business owners said they lost sales because people got upset and left when their bank cards were rejected at the cash registers.

"They were pretty shocked and pretty confused and kind of frustrated," said the manager of a battery shop.

TD Canada Trust says the problems started around 11 a.m. eastern time.

People who found a local branch open on Saturday still had to contend with long lineups. Employees could process transactions on paper, but no banking could be done electronically.

In a news release, spokesman Jeff Keay said technical crews hoped to restore the service by Sunday.
