Now there's a move afoot to jettison much of the advanced-placement program. The reason? By segregating children by ability at age 9, the "regular" classrooms are being shortchanged by lack of class leaders.

NO! Please don't say it's so! They must find the leaders at those levels and encourage those and give special attention when some seem to be lagging. Mixing them back will bring down the higher end at the expense of both poles. You will cheat the higher end and even the slower learners will suffer because the cirriculum, which must accomadate the higher end learners will be too much for them.

This is an inherent problem with the public system in that the "range" of abilities is so broad. To acomadate via ciriculum, both ends of the spectrum are not well served. Even in my kids school which is one of the top in the state, kids are seperated by ability.

The pressure comes from the parents of the low end thinking there is something "unfair" going on. I don't think it is good policy to sacrafice the high end for the sake of the low end. Do you?
