Re: the lack of business, especially Win2K Athlon PC's, is a big problem for AMD. But the release of XP may help things. Hasn't Windows 2000 become an "orphan" OS with this release? Now, don't take me wrong, I wish it weren't true, but I don't think there will be anything other than Service Packs to update Win2K from now on.

Slowly, businesses will start using XP. And that is very available on AMD systems

That's a really good point.

And may be another reason why Intel is running scared. Look at the fortune they're spending on advertising and the continuing decline in the price of whatever is their most expensive current processor.

I don't know if the 2K is an "orphan" OS or not, but a lot of companies will still not consider a PC if it is in the "consumer" line and not from the "business" line. A lot of times it is also due to various other reasons that "managed desktop" networking software is not available on consumer systems or the manufacturer will not customise the software on their consumer lines, but will do so on their business lines.

AMD needs to break into the commercial lines.

Windows XP is Windows 2000 with some extras thrown in.

Petz, Re: "Hasn't Windows 2000 become an "orphan" OS with this release?"

Makes me happy to have three systems running Win2K here. I was annoyed that the OS upgrade price to XP Pro was the same for Win2K as the consumer windows versions. But, I have been happy with Win2K and will probably give XP a try on one system - just not sure if I will go with the home or professional version or even whether it will be an upgrade or whole new OS purchase. I do like that Win2K is dual processor ready... but I am still waiting for some more dual Athlon mobo options! Argh! <g> Of course since I remain a thousand posts behind on the thread perhaps there is some happy news or rumors on this front awaiting me.
