One thing I would differ with the authors inference is the idea that "all we want is to get Osami bin Laden". If on day one the Taliban had turned over bin Laden and done nothing else to dismantle the network of terrorists operating in Afghanistan, would it have been prudent for us to disengange and stop there? I don't think so. We needed to destroy the terrorist training camps, and we needed to send a message to all nations of the world that we will not tolerate the open support and harbering of terrorists in their country. The Taliban may believe he is simply a guest, but we need them to be far more discriminatory toward who they consider "guests". I've read other reports the Taliban and bin Laden are for all intensive purposes the same entity. We may never know the truth with certainty, but what we do believe we know is the people who destroyed our buildings, our planes, and killed our people, are being supported by the people of Afghanistan known as the Taliban. I don't see this as a time in which we need to get deeply involved in understanding other people's culture, as much as a time in which they need to better understand ours! A despicable evil act has been carried out on our soil, against our citizens, and the perpetrators need to get the message that it will not be tolerated. So, perhaps are methods in obtaining bin Laden are somewhat flawed. Sometimes twisted minds of the world need to get a better understanding of the raw power we have at our disposal. There is no doubt in my mind that if bin Laden and his terrorist network had nuclear weapons at their disposal they would use them agains us. Therefore, the historical time to decrease this threat is now. Lastly, I don't really believe the reports the Taliban are some superhero's who will go down to the last breath if need be to save bin Laden. We heard the same sort of stories regarding the Republican guard in Kawaiit before our assault came. In another month, when the bombs keep raining down on the Taliban, they will steadily lose their will to protect bin Laden. In the meantime, we'll care enough about our soldiers to keep them as safe as reasonable. And carry out special forces strikes into the heart of their terrorist network.
