And please, before this devolves into partisan one-upsmanship, recognize that I am an independent with personal political views across the spectrum, depending on the specific issue under discussion.

Fascinating post, and one that stimulates lots of thoughts. I would, for instance, give a lower rating to Eisenhower (with a high rating for Truman), agree on Kennedy, higher rating for Johnson because of the civil rights stuff, lower rating for Nixon because Watergate defined him for me, agree on Ford and Carter, lower on Reagan because the debt growth and his somewhat successful attempt to make government the enemy, agree on Bush I, a bit higher on Clinton but not much, basically agree, and same misgivings about Bush II (the "Eddies", I like that).

However, I'm reluctant to do more than simply hit the buttons. If I started getting into details we could easily turn the thread into a presidential hit parade rating service.

John

Here is my list of stuff that happened so long ago that nobody really argues about it anymore:

Eisenhower - 1953 coup in Iran against Mossadegh
Eisenhower - 1954 coup in Guatemala
Kennedy - 1961 assassination of Patrice Lumumba in Zaire
Kennedy - 1963 coup in Dominican Republic
Kennedy - 1963 coup in Ecuador
Kennedy - 1963 coup against Diem (Nov. 1, 1963 - I knew a VietNamese colonel who believed this was why Kennedy was assassinated)
Johnson - 1964 coup in Brazil
Johnson - 1965 overthrow of Suharto by General Sukarno in Indonesia
Johnson - 1965 action in Dominican Republic
Johnson - 1965 overthrow in Greece
Johnson - 1967 coup in Greece
Nixon - 1970 coup against Prince Sihanouk in Cambodia
Nixon - 1971 coup in Bolivia
Nixon - 1973 coup in Chile against Allende

I love America fiercely. And I know sometimes we have good reasons for doing things that are unsavory

I just want someone reliable to keep an eye on things. Sometimes these guys get a little carried away.

The only thing the President really knows is what his advisors tell him. So the question is always, cui bono?

Pure unadulterated spin. Get your facts straight e.g. the largest
tax increase was inflicted by William Jefferson Blythe Clinton
during 1993 and was RETROACTIVE. During his election campaign
he said he would enact a tax decrease. The big lie was in motion for
eight years.
