I think Murdoch pulled this gambit at the prompt of John Malone. It's hardball, and it's characteristic of Malone in all of his negotiations. The Murdoch camp is betting that: 1) GM, deep down inside that Detriot heart, knows that regulators will not permit a marriage with Echostar; 2)Time is not on Hughes' side to allow the dragging of it's feet because Echostar continues to grab mkt share at a rapid clip; 3) based on point #1 above, NWS's new withdrawal posture will cause GM to panic with the rationale that they have distanced themselves with the only viable game in town instead of reeling them closer as in conventional negotiation template.

Make no mistake, Murdoch still covets Hughes more than ever before.
