Do a search on this thread for "Haiphong", "1964", and "Standard Oil of California". You'll find one of my posts upstream that completely clears up any doubt as to the intent of our engagement in Viet Nam.

I've been reading this thread since it started and the posts you refer to don't exist, as I just confirmed by a search. So I guess I'll have to wait for my complete enlightenment.
