Or is it a case of losing his mind ???? India doesn't threaten. India just amputates....when it wants to. HG@ByeByeEastPakistan.eduMusharraf brands India ‘aggressor’ Vijay Dutt (London, October 27) President Pervez Musharraf sees only one purpose in the Indian mind and that is to harm Pakistan. While giving an assessment of the Afghan war and outlining his vision for the peace in the region the General could not help but have a dig at India. Nor did he fail in imputing aggressive motives to India, notwithstanding the fact that in all the Indo-Pak wars so far, Pakistan has been the aggressor. "We are prepared for the worst consequences from the Indian side and we have the potential and capability to defend ourselves effectively," the President told the Daily Telegraph in an interview. But the daily in its leader says that America and its allies have to ensure that General Musharraf sticks to his schedule for return to democracy and also presses for a reduction of tension with India. On Islamabad's side the latter would mean ceasing support for jehad in Kashmir. "Countering terrorism, after all, is what Pakistan's newfound prominence is all about," the leader warns. The edit also acknowledges that the concern about Pakistan's nuclear status and its snail-like reversion to democracy has been muted since it joined the coalition against the Taliban. Also encouraging noises, from Islamabad's point of view, have been made about the confrontation with India over Kashmir. The General, on his part, has been careful to reaffirm his commitment to the US military campaign. But he has also voiced his fears of the catastrophe that could follow if there was no political strategy to put in place once the war was over. "Any military campaign has to set objectives and those objectives have to be attained. You can't cut a military campaign midway without achieving them. We haven't set any limits. We are part of the coalition. The reality on the ground needs to be constantly assessed... we go on until the objectives are achieved," he says. But while the US and the British defence chiefs warn of a long-haul war, Musharraf says the longer the war lasts and the greater is the civilian causality, there is more likelihood of the public support waning. US Reward to Pak * Pakistan is likely to get an aid package running into several billion dollars * It would make Pakistan the largest recipient of US aid after Israel and Egypt * Proposed package includes debt rescheduling, grants and trade benefits * It has been criticised in Washington because Pak does not come under WB and IMF standards of poor nations * Lawmakers say the US may have agreed too readily on $600 to Pakistan this year and next without ensuring that it is spent on health and education rather on militants it backs in Kashmir ******** Georgie, better be sure a kashmiri Osama doesn't bite your butt off a few years from now ! - HG * US aid to Pakistan and Afghan rebels in the eighties is seen as having helped finance the rise of the Taliban * WB and IMF denies debt relief to poor countries engaged in war so that money does not reach militants.
