Searle, Ron Paul is a hero among those of us who are libertarian in outlook. He was in the house of representatives for several terms until 1986 when he was ousted in a crooked election and some Democrat got in by a few votes. In 1988 he took his message nationwide and ran for president on the Libertarian ticket. I remember this because I voted for him that year. In 1996, he squeaked back in to the house of representatives shocking his Democratic opponent in the year Clinton won a landslide reelection (heh, heh--as landslide as Clinton will ever get). In 2000 he was reelected with 60% of the vote in his Texan district.
