You may not have intended to applaud him for that, but I think that is the way he will take it. I applauded him for being open minded enough to entertain the notion that we heathens can be "decent" and "generous of spirit." I think that's worth positively reinforcing. One never knows, however, how someone else will interpret what one says, but that's what I meant. Officiousness, I can do without, but it's certainly not the most unpleasant thing that goes on around here.
