I think if you think about it you will find officiousness to be one of the chief evils of humanity. Or maybe I just find it that.

Well, I had to run off (not to be confused with "be run off") to check the dictionary. I thought I knew what "officious" meant. I did spend 30 years as a bureaucrat, after all. And I even worked for a while early in life as a salesperson in a clothing store where I was paid to follow customers around offering suggestions.

<<Marked by excessive eagerness in offering unwanted services or advice to others: an officious host; officious attention. >>

I can't find anything more than mildly annoying about that.

When you referred to Greg's officiousness, I wasn't really sure where you were coming from so I just addressed the "applause" part and ignored the "for officiousness."

Regarding the thrusting of religions, Greg is surely inclined to do that, but in this latest transaction, the subject was thread hygiene, not his usual subject of religion so I don't get the connection. If by "officious" you meant that he was meddling, or a bit of a thread vigilante, it seems to me that changes in thread culture and participation are the legitimate business of all regulars.

If officious means "inclined to proselytize," I share your aversion of it. But I've never heard it used that way.
