Suspend can be resumed by network activity, mouse action, or other actions depending on the settings the user has chosen. Power use is very low - my lapatop will suspend for a week with almost no battery drain. The actions taken on a resume are simply to verify the connected hardware, reestablish network connections and light off the restart, which takes only a second or two. This works fine on a desktop too - all the presario machines from Compaq have suspend as the default after 20 minutes. Since the monitor is also idled, total system power use is very low, only a few watts. Hibernate is also easy to set as the default on a desktop, and can also be invoked with either the "sleep" or front panel power button. Restart is of course a lot faster than a reboot. My Presario 7000 restores from hibernate in about 20 seconds, and that is with 512MB of RAM. It is about 10 seconds with 128 MB. And you can do anything you like to the machine when it is in hibernation including unplugging it and changing hardware. I don't think my user sample is necessarily among the most clever 50% of the population; for example the people I stayed with in Germany are fairly low tech - he is in the financial sector and she stays at home with the children. They were doing things with their computers that I had never thought to do, some of it pretty neat stuff. I also think that the Scandinavians have their own unique take on computers - as well as cars, furnishings, clothes and pretty much everything else. So perhaps you should consider the broadness of your own viewpoint before commenting on mine - not that I would want you to change <G>!!
