"I don't think your solution is representative."

Broaden your mind and think of those who are not amongst your European clients.

"Most people I know shut down their computer when they go home"
I don't worry about it. I just go home, the computer hibernates and save power on it's own after an elapsed period of time. It's gradual, the monitor shut off first, then the drives spin down then the computer hibernates.

"the screen said "This beta version of Windows 95 has expired."
That is a stupid example. The client was screwed by the person that sold them a beta copy in the first place.

Lars - My DSL provider does indeed have a router, and I do not have a fixed IP address - it is in a range with the lower 2 bytes variable. It only changes if my DSL modem is powered down or reset, but the point is that the IP address assigned is variable and that makes no difference to how things work.

Likewise the address does not have to be permanent to be public for the purpose of a peer to peer connection - there are lots of mechanisms to set up the link that are dynamic in nature, and many that use a name service rather than a specific address. That will only increase as new P2P capability becomes more common.
