Again it depends very much who you talk to and if you are American or not when you talk to them. Remember that there is a fairly large share of Europeans that USA as an enemy and would never visit McDonalds simply because it's American. I've also met a lot of these people in IT business. They are just one kind of Europeans, but if you haven't met those people, you are not in the position to judge Europeans generally.

My point is that Microsoft is U.S. centric. The launch event was big enough to be referred to in European media, but there was no European alternative, and the New York event clearly wasn't target at Europe.
