Jim, Re: "For those who haven't seen it. Check out the AMD video with the HSF taken off..."

When properly set up, it's sure nice to know that the temperature sensor really does work, but when Tom's Hardware did their video, the temperature sensor was not set up. Having incomplete setups is just as bad as having a bug in the actual hardware. The difference between Palomino and the Pentium III and Pentium 4, is that Intel builds the thermal diode to work without any support from the BIOS or external drivers, so there is no situation where it will fail completely. Now that AMD has proven that their hardware works, their next job is to make sure that motherboards that are shipped have the right settings so that their chip won't go into meltdown on them.

Overall, this is still a black eye for them when it comes to server sales. They have justified their product, but beyond a few eager Internet enthusiasts, how well is AMD doing in showing this to their customers?

<font color=red>Video showing AMD Thermal diode REALLY DOES WORK!

AMD Slaps Around Little Tom-Tom?

A video has appeared on the Internet countering a huge dose of FUD my former employer inexplicably dumped on his readership a couple of months back. The new video, with AMD credits all over it, is entitled "How an Athlon(tm) MP 1.2GHz Really Copes with Heat Emergencies." The piece demonstrates the AMD Palomino Athlon subjected to brutal circumstances such as heat sink removal while playing Quake III and boot up attempts when a CPU cooler is not attached. In all scenarios, the Palomino comes out unscathed. A similar though much less thorough test came out with unsurprisingly different results at Tom's Hardware. Ouch! Looks like dispensing bad medicine can result in a mouthful of looser teeth. Good job Ben & Joe, perhaps you can also give THG a crash course in analyzing computer technology.

The video also presents the much more realistic situation when the CPU fan fails. In that case the Palomino continued to play Quake III for several minutes before shutting down. Again the chip was undamaged.

Fire Up Your AMD MP!

For those of you that seen Tom's Hardware article "Hot Spot - How Modern Processors Cope With Heat Emergencies"... You REALLY think that AMD CPUs does burn up if you don't have HSF on it, but here is a video that came straight from AMD and proves it it's not entirely true... it really depend on what kinds of hardware you have. Grab the video here kaosoverlords.net & ftp://ftp.kaosoverlords.net/pub/amdburn.zip !
