Religious, political leaders term church killings a bid to malign Muslims By Our Correspondent LAHORE: Religious parties have termed the killing of Christian worshippers in a Bahawalpur church conspiracy to destroy religious harmony in the country and malign Muslims in the perspective of their support to Afghans against US strikes. They condemned the incident, saying Islam made it obligatory on Muslims to protect minorities and termed it a work of CIA or RAW for obvious reasons. Addressing a large rally in Lahore, Jamaat-e-Islami amir Qazi Hussain Ahmad said that no Muslim could do it to Christians because Islam protects the minorities more than the Muslims. "If viewed in the light of religious quarters' response to US attacks on Afghanistan, it becomes clear that it is an attempt to malign Muslims and create problems for religious parties in Pakistan with a view to divert their attention from Afghanistan. The killing of innocent Christians is the same cowardice like targeting innocent Muslims in the US and Europe after September 11," he added. JUI-S chief Maulana Samiul Haq, while addressing the rally, said that it was out of question that any Muslim was responsible for the act. He termed it work of anti-state and anti-Islam forces. JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman said that it was a Western conspiracy to destroy tolerant and peaceful atmosphere in Pakistan. He said that after failing to harm Taliban in excessive bombings, the US had now tried to spark Muslim-Christian riots only to divert world attention from its own embarrassment. He said that there was no doubt that Pakistani Christians were our brothers, patriotic citizens and had nothing to do with the terrorism committed by the US government in Afghanistan. JUP chief Maulana Shah Ahmad Noorani said that it was the work of RAW and other anti-Islam forces, and a conspiracy to create problems for Pakistan. He said that Muslims and Christians were living in perfect harmony and there was no cause for such an incident. He demanded immediate probe and arrests of the culprits. SSP information secretary Maulana Mujibur Rehman Inqilabi said that it was the work of Americans, which wanted to create Indonesia-like situation in Pakistan. "After failing to create Shia-Sunni clash at this juncture, they have opted to create Muslim-Christian strife to pressurise mujahideen and religious parties," he added. Punjab TJP deputy secretary-general Tauqeer Baba said that RAW was behind the incident, which wanted to show it as a reaction to the bombings in Afghanistan to malign the religious quarters in Pakistan. He said that the government must act swiftly to arrest and punish the culprits so as to thwart the conspiracy. "Our enemy wants to neutralise the world respect and attention, which Pakistan has achieved by cooperating world alliance against terrorism," he added. Meanwhile, the political parties have termed the killing of innocent Christians in Bahawalpur an act of terrorism and attempt to destabilise the country at a time when the world is passing through a critical political situation. PML-QA president Mian Azhar said the act was a direct attack on the Christian-Muslim unity and termed it a conspiracy of India to damage the repute of Pakistan as it was acting as a front line state against terrorism. He said by conducting such acts, India wanted to gave a message to the world that minorities in Pakistan were not safe. PML-N acting President Javed Hashmi condemned the act and said it was sponsored by RAW, which leave no chance to defame Pakistan. He said the accused be hanged, so that no person in the future could dare to carry on such acts. Sardar Zulfiqar Khosa said that such acts of terrorism were aimed at creating misunderstanding among Christians and Muslims. He said that minorities were fully safe in the country, but India wanted to tarnish the image of Pakistan for its interests. Saeed Ahmed Khan Manais, former opposition leader in the Punjab Assembly, said the killing of innocent people, wherever it took place, was condemnable. He said the accused persons might be traced and given exemplary punishment, so that such acts could be checked in the future. PPP leader Aitzaz Ahsan also condemned the brutal killing of the innocent people. Tehrike Insaf chief Imran Khan condemned the act and asked for an action against the responsible ones. Millat Party President Farooq Leghari and chief organiser Muhammad Ali Durrani in a joint statement said the main objective behind the act was seemed to create unrest among the Muslims and Christians in the country. They said the Constitution of the country guaranteed rights to minorities. They demanded high level probe into the incident as after September 11 attacks in the US, it was an attempt to sabotage the just stance of Pakistan against the global terrorism. PML-QA leader Mian Abdul Waheed said the killing was an eye opener for the security agencies as these had failed to maintain law and order. He said that India through such acts was trying to divert the international attention from core issue of Kashmir. Labour Party secretary-general Farooq Tariq said that it was proved that the government had miserably failed to stop such incidents and it should step down if it could not take steps for the safety of the people.
