>>even if none of the adults actually read them.<<

Imagine if the adults did read them. And more updated versions. And passed that knowledge, and thirst for knowledge, on.

I grew up with such a set of books on the shelves, and the encyclopedias are outdated and gone, but the set of "the great writings of the world" are still in the library at the parents home. And I still pull one off now and then when visiting.

I can't think of a "useless" research paper I did in school, as I learned from them all.

One thing I'm seeing in reading things here, and talking with people in their 20's and younger, is a great disparity in ways of thinking about the world and this situation.

A new crop of leaders came to the forefront in WWII, in a new age and a new way of battle. Maybe it is time for that now, too.

Maybe most of the "children of the sixties" are too outdated in their thinking to deal with this. Like switching from calvary to tanks.

And, yes, I'm going from a vague strain in your post to some things that are on my mind.
