It saddened me deeply and my heart goes out to the victims and their families,” Musharraf said in his condolence message. Sixteen people, including a police constable, were killed when the worshippers, who had assembled at St. Dominic Church for Sunday service, were fired upon indiscriminately by unidentified terrorists. The President said the method used and the inhuman tactics employed clearly indicated involvement of trained terrorists or organizations bent upon creating discord and disharmony in Pakistan. “Christians and Muslims have always lived in peace with mutual respect for each other,” he said, adding that a thorough investigation was already under way. However, the General said he would not comment any further on the identity of the terrorists until the investigation was concluded. “I assure everyone that we shall track down the culprits and bring them to justice.” He said Islam was a religion of peace and it condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestation.”Islam provides full security to the minorities and no Muslim can commit this crime.” The President also directed two Federal Ministers, Col. (Retd) S.K. Tressler and Dr Mahmud Ghazi, to immediately rush to Bahawalpur and visit the bereaved families and express condolences on his behalf. The Ministers have also been directed to assess and recommend compensation for the bereaved families. “The provincial governments have also been directed to beef up security in view of the terrorist attack,” a senior official said. He said security arrangements around all worship places particularly the churches in all parts of the country have been tightened.
