I have a funny story to tell you. I will be taking a very difficult single subject praxis test in the subject of my major (biology) and I was studying with some other people. Two of these people teach at religious schools. A section of the praxis is devoted to the theory of biology- a major part of any science program. I find that two of the people I am studying with did not agree with the theory of evolution, so they either did not learn it, or took no classes in which they had to really study it. So they do not agree with this theory even though they have NO clue what the supporting evidence is. Of course they want me to tell them all about it NOW, so they can pass the test. To take just one example, they had no clue as to what homologous structures are. These are people who want to teach- and they don't have a clue. Even if they don't want to agree with the theory as teachers they have a duty to be informed on it. the sheer IDIOCY of people overwhelms me.

I am going to plead illness for the next study group. I will be highly amazed if they pass on their own.

BYU is a church supported institution. The fact that it expects faculty and speakers to reflect church teaching and policy does not seem odd to me. The fact is; the school is fairly up front about what is acceptable - unlike many other private and public universities where "official" attitudes are masked.
