Pro-Taliban Pakistanis seize northern town of Chilas

AFP

Peshawar, October 29, 08:13

Hundreds of armed pro-Taliban Pakistanis have seized a remote northern town demanding the government to stop supporting the US-led strikes on Afghanistan, witnesses said.

The rebels, armed with rocket launchers, Kalashnikov assault rifles, handmade guns and swords, took over most government offices in Chilas about 350 km northeast of Peshawar on Sunday.

Pro-Taliban Pakistanis, meanwhile, continued their control of a portion of the key Karakoram highway for the fourth consecutive day severing northern Pakistan's links with its mighty neighbour China.

The Pakistani Home ministry said troops are being sent to oust the rebels from the mountainous town and open the road.

The 1,200-km Karakoram highway was built along the ancient Silk Route that linked Asia with the West and connects Pakistan with Kashgar in China's northwestern Xinjiang region.

It is a major trade link between Pakistan and China, though the Chinese all but sealed it after the September 11 attacks.

Hardline Muslims, specially those living along Pakistan's border with Afghanistan, are outraged by the government's decision to help the United States in its war on Afghanistan's Taliban rulers.

<< We can not let the liberal press win the war for the terrorists in the U.S. >>

Do you feel irresponsible statements, which split Americans along ideological beliefs helps or hinders the terrorists?

Who is the liberal press, and how are they helping the terrorists?

<< The Press is upset that they can not camera's in position prior to the invasion. >>

A free press is what separates a democracy from a dictatorship. We've had journalists on the front lines during many wars, including World War II, where many of them lost their lives bringing America the news. In fact, the military often invites the news to come along with them.

Of course the Press would be upset if they could not film the invasion. But, chances are, they will be invited by the military.

<< They are now pulling out the " What about the children" and 9 civilians killed in bomb blast. >>

You don't want the people to know about civilian causualties? Why not? Is it liberal to be in favor of a free press, and conservative to have only government censored news to be shown to the public?

Agreed. All the nice ways were tried with these scum of the earth....now what is required is absolute and total fear
to the muslim world. The fear of total annihilation to all muslims who still have common sense and don't want to see their religion feared and scorned world wide.
