Hmaly, <But the realization by the investing public of the inability of Intel to wage a successful price war against AMD, should finally raise AMD's share price, to a somewhat even standing.>

I think you have it backwards. A short while back, AMD's stock price was close to Intel's. Now it's less than half. If anything, the public realizes that it's AMD who's waging the futile price war against Intel.

But hey, maybe the investing public should read more Businessweek! LOL!

<Jerry, you have to admit he has out dueled Craig easily. He sure called the outcome of the 98 price war correctly, and by overcoming the last one, has solidified AMD's position nicely, without expending a lot of cash.>

Nice try. As any Intel-a-bee will tell you, AMD has sold off several divisions over the past few years in an effort to finance Jerry's vendetta. Whether they were profitable or not is irrelevant, because the point is that they had to shed lots of weight, while Intel didn't. And with AMD's continued losses, they won't have much more weight to shed.

By the way, when did Sanders ever make a prediction regarding the 1998 price war? All he said was "It's all Intel's fault. Wait 'til Athlon." Sound familiar? It should.

<As far as Jerry selling some of his shares, why not. They are his.>

It's the timing of it that stinks. When he sold his shares, he (or was it Ruiz?) was on the squawk box saying how AMD will meet the quarter. Then after stuffing the channel in a futile effort to hold that promise, they warn a mere week before earnings. At best, it shows incompetence on his part. At worst, it was a dirty deed.

Perhaps both, will throttle their immediate plans, and do like other industries, and control their output, to parity with the demand, on roughly a 70- 30 split.

I agree with what you are saying, except for fixing the 70-30 split. The balance should come about by the companies trying to maximise profits and not, as currently, minimizing market share losses. If that were the case then we would probably have the 70-30 split for now, but it would not be a result of price fixing.

I think the real problem recently has been that Intel were so paranoid about the P4 transition stalling that they reacted with excessive cuts. The drop in global demand was not so huge that their ASPs had to drop by such a large amount. If they had protected their ASPs then they would have made a lot more money and AMD would be in about the same position, IMO.

I have no delusions about this price war profiting either. Except that it may just finish off Intels obsessions with price wars. Otherwise, I don't expect a big rise in demand. But the realization by the investing public of the inability of Intel to wage a successful price war against AMD, should finally raise AMD's share price, to a somewhat even standing.

Tortured logic. AMD started the price war and Intel simply responded. Intel cannot start a war AFTER being attacked and nobody starts a war by pricing higher than the competition.

No matter how much you dislike Jerry, you have to admit he has out dueled Craig easily.

I don't call driving a company into a $100 million loss an example of outdueling his profitable competitor, but then again you can't figure out who started the price war so I guess at least you're consistent.
