Thanks for what appears to be an honest answer. You may be wrong with:

"1) They may provoke the U.S. into overreacting. So far they are doing well on the public relations front in the Middle East and they want to press their advantage."

If they thought this incident in Pakistan would change our strategy regarding the war on terrorism they were wrong. I doubt this was one of their goals.

In your second point you say "The perpetrators want to weaken the government so they can have another coup", and i agree with that. In America this would weaken their case and strengthen the government's case. The lady from the L.A. Times indicated it was weakening the government, but I say that remains to be seen. My feeling is that it shows their ruthlessness and their stupidity. I think it will backfire, and the general population over their will see what scumbags they truly are. Since the country is poorly educated, I could be wrong.
