One of the news shows estimated a max of $500 per flight for two marshals. ($100K per year divided by 400 flights per year each marshal.)

A better approach would be to create a sealed bullet proof cabin and have an emergency auto-pilot takeover system within reach of the pilots.

Whenever an emergency happens, the pilot hits the button and the plane locks into auto-pilot and automatically lands at the nearest airport. This feature could also be available to the flight crew in secret locations.

With this system operating, Sky Marshall's could be limited and fly randomly on different flights.

In other words, your answer is whatever it takes, pin it on the taxpayers.

Not good enough. How can you tout letting the government do it, and not even know what it will cost you? There are other ways. Taking care of security on the ground before the plane ever gets in the air is one. AND I doubt you will ever see a commercial airliner hit another building, the passengers are not going to let it happen, unless the plane is hijacked before it ever leaves the ground.

Here is a figure to look at:

7000 Air Marshals at 75,000.00 per year.

525,000,000.

I bet that is WAY conservative too.

JF,

As best as I could tell; in 1997, the Federal Air Marshall program had a budget of $1.2 Million Dollars and an Administrative staff of around 10 people - which a budget report said, was bloated. The marshals were, I guess, specially trained "volunteers" from other federal law enforcement programs(?) and mainly were used (again from what I understand) on international flights.

You may want to double check though.
