<<while your downside targets may be dead on, i think we also have at least 10 years of sideways action after that point. when looking at mean growth on all major indices from a monthly perspective, we are at historical highs with regards to the 50 and 200 month moving averages. that takes years and years to work off.>>

Quite possible. And I think that while the sideways grinding goes on, that gold will rock our world as the Fed does what it does best, tries to reanimate this corpse of an economy with "liquidity"...oil, timber, natural resources will all rock if they're successful at halting deflation. Gold will rock whether they're successful or not.

Fleck and Asness have made the point repeatedly that even if we've hit the nadir for profits growth, the subsequent anemic recovery will produce a massive PE contraction for all the major big cap indices. I think this view is correct.

We could regress to the mean over a 7-8 year period of sideways as you say, but an S & P drop to 600-700 would hastily speed up that process! Unfortunately, those who are going to retire in the next ten years will be royally screwed waiting to break even.

I remain,

Here's the DUMBEST article on short-selling I've seen in months!<NG>

cbs.marketwatch.com

The odds are against short traders now. The volatile market makes it tough for short sellers because the price of stocks can spike in either direction, and that choppiness threatens percentage returns.

"Sellers are out of the game," Howard says. "There aren't particular sectors across the board that we can rely on now to short sell."

This may be a sign that that the stock market will soon hit bottom. Perhaps this is an indication that the market is ready to turn up

Lessee, short interest is DOWN, so that means stocks are going UP? ROTFLMAO, no wonder it's been so easy making $$$ in this market!<NG>
