There were a few outposts of civilization in the 80's that rarely got a mention on mainstream media or MTV, ie, the Replacements, Husker Du, REM (at least in the first half of the decade), the Pixies, the Dead Kennedys, the Blasters. It wasn't a complete wasteland.....
