Wanna, Re: <What's wrong with AMD's flash business, anyway?>

If I had to guess I'd say AMD was one quarter behind INTC in having their 'Long Term Contracts' ripped up by their customers.

I'm going to completely pass on that list of 'ifs' in your post.

Are you bookmarking our bet or should I?

wanna, Well, you read too much into what I said.No screwup is needed on the part of Intel if both the ia64 and the hammer work there will be a natural slower uptake of the ia64 dur to lack of x86 path compatibility. Sure some will go that way, but many will take the easy hammer way.

Nothing is wrong with flash that resurgent demand will not fix, their parts are good and the flash division still makes money, if flash does very well it can cross subsidize the hammer divison until it if fixed(if the hammer is broken)

As for Intel, well they are probably reluctant to publicly make anything that will steal thunder from ia64, but they have a resposibilty to SH to have a fallback position in case the ia64 bombs.

evolotionary products based on the P4 may be faster, but diminishing in capability wrt hammer derivatives.

Intel is also taking abig risk, look at IBM and the microchannel! Remember all the companies who jumped on that band wagon and died with it.

>What if the i845 with DDR ends up performing as good as RDRAM?<

According to PC World, P4 with Via's unlicensed DDR chipset is as much faster than P4 with DRDRAM as P4 with DRDRAM is faster than P4 with SDRAM. I would anticipate that the i845 with DDR would be even faster.
