Stratus Ships New Versions Of Intel-Based, Fault Tolerant ftServer 3200 Servers
MAYNARD, MA -- (INTERNET WIRE) -- 29-10-2001 -- Stratus Technologies, Inc., maker of the world's most reliable server technologies, today announced that two new configuration options for the Stratus® ftServerâ„¢ 3200 series are now shipping:
- a two-way symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) version, which provides customers with increased processing speed and performance. Stratus is the first to use a true fault-tolerant SMP parallel-computing architecture in a Windows® 2000-based environment.
- an 8U rack-mount version, which offers a convenient design to fit a standard 19-inch, customer-supplied rack, and economizes on data-center space.
The one-way, ftServer 3210 pedestal model has been shipping since August 2001.
Stratus has also reduced base system pricing by approximately 5.0 percent for both the one-way and two-way models since it first announced the ftServer 3210 series on September 4, 2001. The change reflects the decreasing cost of industry-standard components used in Stratus' Intel® processor-based servers. It also further improves the price/performance value of the compact ftServer 3200 series over high-availability cluster solutions for business-critical applications.
"When uptime is crucial, why put important Windows 2000 applications on clusters that are engineered to recover after a failure rather than a server designed not to fail in the first place, especially when both are comparably priced?" said Michael Thompson, senior vice president, Worldwide Sales & Marketing for Stratus. "The ftServer system eliminates the price premium once associated with fault-tolerant computing, and the complexity associated with cluster building and management. And with this announcement, the choices, options, flexibility, and overall performance of ftServer systems just ratcheted up a few notches higher, as well."
The Stratus ftServer family established a new product category when it was first announced in June 2001 with the introduction of the ftServer 5200 model, the industry's first fault-tolerant server for Windows 2000 computing. These Intel processor-based ftServer systems provide unparalleled performance to meet the escalating need for system uptime and 24/7 application availability brought about by the proliferation of business-critical e-commerce and corporate infrastructure applications. In addition to providing the highest availability levels in the industry, self-contained ftServer systems run Windows 2000 applications unmodified, integrate quickly into the IT infrastructure, and require little-to-no staff support for ongoing operation, system management, or servicing.
Price and Availability
Stratus ftServer 3210 pedestal and rack-mount models are available now in both one- and two-way configurations. Pricing for a base-system configuration, which includes dual-modular redundancy with 256MB memory, two disks, Stratus system software, modem, monitor, and country kit (keyboard and documentation) is as follows: Pedestal ftServer 3210 one-way system, $17,487; Pedestal ftServer 3210 two-way SMP system, $19,486; add $400 for rack-mount models of each. All prices are U.S. list only; prices will vary by channel and geography.
A one-way Stratus ftServer 3210 system may be upgraded to two-way SMP server.
